KUCHING: Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has called for greater corporate support in developing youth football in Sarawak, while acknowledging the continued contributions of Lea Sports Centre and PETRONAS.

“We’ve seen strong contributions from Lea and PETRONAS, but we need others to come forward – oil companies, tech companies, all the big names,” he said.

He said this during a press conference on the PETRONAS Youth Football Closed Tournament 2025 at Baitulmakmur Building II today.

The Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development said corporate involvement is instrumental in nurturing young talent and driving grassroots football in the state, stressing that government support alone is not enough to sustain long-term sports development.

“We believe contributions from the corporate sector are very important – essential in developing young talent.

“We hope that with Sarawak’s growth, especially in sectors like energy and technology, more companies will step forward,” he said.

He commended Lea Sports Centre for its consistent support, but emphasised that more companies must join the effort.

“Little by little, Lea has helped us a lot, and I truly acknowledge that.

“But we don’t want it to be just PETRONAS and Lea – there are many other large corporate entities out there,” he added.

Moreover, Abdul Karim also praised companies like Press Metal, which has contributed significantly to Sarawak’s badminton development in recent years, but noted that many other companies have yet to make a meaningful impact.

“Some companies are making millions and millions, but very few are helping to develop sports,” he said.

He urged these companies to channel more of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts into youth and sports development, assuring them that the state would provide due recognition.

“You help us, we’ll publicise your name and recognise your contribution. It’s time to give back,” he said.

Abdul Karim’s remarks come amid a broader push to strengthen youth football in Sarawak, with the PETRONAS Youth Football Closed Tournament 2025 serving as a key platform to identify and nurture grassroots talent.
