Foreign collaborations, awards raise Sarawak’s international recognition

KUCHING: Sarawak is gaining more international recognition as several foreign investors have expressed interest in establishing direct collaborations with the state.

Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Minister (MYSED), Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said he recently undertook a 19-day official visit to several major European cities, including Barcelona and London, in conjunction with World Tourism Month.

“They (Europe) hold Sarawak in high regard and have shown interest in forging direct collaborations with the state.

“In fact, the top management of FC Barcelona has also opened the door for collaboration with Sarawak, including the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

“This initiative is not solely related to football, but aims to build a stronger sports ecosystem in Sarawak,” he revealed after officiating the Sarawak Business Events Forum 2025 representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Sheraton Hotel here today.

In this regard, he said the visit provided an opportunity to showcase Sarawak’s importance in the business sector and sports development.

In another development, Abdul Karim shared that during the opening of the SEA Games in Bangkok, he had the opportunity to meet a Philippine congressman and President of the Philippine Olympic Committee, Abraham Tolentino.

“Abraham was impressed by Sarawak’s rapid development and effective management of state resources, which has left a positive impression of Sarawak among regional and international leaders.

“When we receive such recognition from external parties, it brings pride to all Sarawakians and affirms that the state’s efforts in developing the business, sports and tourism sectors are worthwhile,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy State Secretary (Operation), Datuk Hii Chang Kee, revealed that Abdul Karim became the first minister from Asia to present a topic on government collaboration at the 64th International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Congress held in Porto, Portugal.

“This is proof of global recognition of Sarawak’s leadership,” he said.

Hii added that Sarawak has also received 31 international awards, including the ICCA Award of Appreciation and The Iceberg Excellence Award.

“Among the latest achievements are the development of the Legacy Impact Master Action Plan and the introduction of the Association Impact Masterclass in collaboration with the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).

“These are recognitions of the state’s leadership in managing high-impact business events,” he added.
