KUCHING: A foreign national has been fined RM10,000 by the Kuching Sessions Court for illegally possessing subsidised cooking oil without a licence.

The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sarawak charged the accused in Sessions Court 4 on Feb 3, under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

The individual was found in possession of 68kg of subsidised packet cooking oil during an inspection by KPDN’s strategic partners in an undisclosed area en route to the Border Control Post (PKS), Sarawak.

Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi imposed the RM10,000 fine, with an alternative six-month imprisonment if the accused failed to pay. The accused paid the fine and was released, while the confiscated goods were forfeited for disposal.

KPDN has urged the public to report any misuse or smuggling of controlled and subsidised goods through available channels, including WhatsApp, email, hotline and the Ez ADU KPDN mobile app.

Sarawak KPDN director Matthew Dominic Barin stressed the importance of public cooperation in curbing the illegal trade of controlled goods.
