KUCHING: The forestry sector in Sarawak is will benefit from clearer environmental compliance standards following the launch of the ‘Guidance Document on Interpreting Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Terms and Conditions for Forestry Sector Projects’ in Sarawak.
The document provides sector-specific interpretations and reference tables for two major forestry activities in hill forests timber harvesting and industrial forest plantation development to help industry players better understand and comply with approved EIA report requirements.
Described as a “living document”, it is designed to evolve alongside regulatory and industry developments, supporting Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to balance environmental stewardship with sustainable economic growth.
The document was jointly developed by the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and the Sarawak Timber Association (STA) Environmental Compliance Audit (ECA) Working Group, with technical input from the Forest Department Sarawak (FDS).
It was launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the Hari Alam Sekitar Negara 2025 Sarawak-level celebration held at Roxy Beach Resort, Sematan, on Oct 29.
NREB controller Datuk Jack Liam said the initiative marks a proactive step in strengthening environmental compliance and self-regulation within the forestry sector.
He said the guide would serve as a practical reference for both internal and external auditors, as well as project proponents, to ensure that the terms and conditions of EIA approvals are effectively implemented and consistently monitored.
“With the full implementation of ECA for the forestry sector beginning July 1, 2024, the guidance document bridges the gap between regulatory requirements and on-ground practices, ensuring that environmental safeguards are translated into measurable actions,” he said.
The document complements existing Guidelines for Natural Resources and Environment (Audit) Rules, 2008, and reinforces the long-standing collaboration between NREB and STA in promoting responsible environmental practices and regulatory compliance.
This partnership continues to exemplify both organisations’ shared commitment to Sarawak’s sustainability agenda under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, towards responsible, resilient and sustainable forest management.
