KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas had a first-hand look at an almost forgotten Iban traditional three-stringed musical instrument known as the ‘belikan’.

The ‘belikan’ is considered the Iban equivalent of the ‘sape’, the Orang Ulu lute that has gained popularity among local musicians.

Opar Assemblyman, Billy Sujang, brought along two brothers – both makers of ‘sape’ and ‘belikan’ – to meet Uggah at his office at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) building here yesterday.

Uggah later purchased several ‘belikan’ instruments from the brothers for his personal collection.
