KUCHING: The Sessions Court here sentenced a former store employee to one year in prison and one stroke of the cane for criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM18,960.85 belonging to a 24-hour convenience store last year.
Awang Aiman Hakimi Abdullah, 21, from Serian, pleaded guilty before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman to a charge under Section 408 of the Penal Code for failing to deposit the funds into the company’s account.
The offense, committed in stages throughout September 2024 at 7th Mile, Kota Sentosa, carries a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment, caning, and a fine, upon conviction.
According to the case facts, on Oct 11 last year, the store manager received a report from the finance department highlighting discrepancies in cash sales for September.
A police report was then lodged for further action, which led to Awang’s arrest.
Investigations revealed that Awang had sold various top-up cards, TNG, Shopee payments, and Sarawak Energy bill payments without recording the transactions, using the funds for personal purposes.
During mitigation, Awang, represented by Jong Yee Ling from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), requested a lenient sentence as he has to support his younger sister who is still studying at a higher learning institution.
The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Ng Xiang Hua.
