KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has endorsed the proposal to include the Dayak Cultural Foundation (DCF) in the upgrading programme of Fort Lily and Fort Slyvia.

DCF intends to gather and exhibit tangible and intangible Iban artefacts in these forts. Abang Johari expressed his approval of this initiative, emphasizing Sarawak’s commitment to preserving its cultural identity while progressing.

“In this regard, you are discussing a management buyout, so go ahead with it. We need staff members not only to showcase our artefacts but also to provide explanations about the exhibited products in our forts or museums.

“Therefore, you have my support to collect the artefacts. The crucial aspect is interactivity. If possible, utilise technology to engage visitors through narratives and information, similar to our Borneo Cultures Museum. I believe we should consider BCM as a model for our forts,” he stated.

He made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the Iban Cultural Heritage Symposium and Expo 2024 at the Dayak Cultural Foundation Headquarters.

Abang Johari further proposed that involving local individuals is the most effective way to preserve the culture.

“Engage someone who possesses knowledge of the history and background related to the exhibits. If we receive visitors, they will be able to better appreciate what Sarawak has to offer.

“Additionally, scholars from other countries may visit to research the connections between our ethnic groups and theirs. Therefore, I wholeheartedly support your proposal,” he affirmed.

He concluded by expressing his gratitude and admiration for DCF’s dedication to preserving Sarawak’s culture and identity while the state continues to advance.
