KUCHING: Police here have arrested four local men and seized nearly 3kg of ecstasy and cannabis in three separate anti-drug operations carried out over two days.

Sarawak police, through its Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), carried out the raid between July 3 and 4 in different residential areas.

Kuching District police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said in the first case, a 30-year-old local man was arrested at a house along Jalan Upper Chawan on July 3 at around 1.40 pm.

“During the raid, police seized 2,209.73 grams of suspected ecstasy powder, estimated to be worth RM2,209.73.

“The suspect tested positive for benzodiazepines and did not have any prior drug-related record,” he said in a statement today.

The following day, on July 4, Alexson said the police raided another house in Taman Hussein around 4 pm and detained two local men, aged 33 and 35, and seized 227.33 grams of dried leaves believed to be cannabis, valued at RM1,550.

“Both suspects tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and, like the first suspect, have no previous criminal records related to drugs,” he said.

Later that same day, around 5 pm, Alexson said the police arrested another man, aged 28, at a house in Kampung Lintang, where 541 grams of suspected cannabis worth RM3,800 were confiscated.

“The suspect also tested positive for THC and was found to have no previous offences,” he said.

He added that all four men have been remanded until July 11 to assist in investigations.

All cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, and with not less than 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death.

Alexson also called upon the public to continue channelling information related to drug distribution and abuse in their communities.

“We welcome cooperation from the public to report such activities immediately to the nearest police station so that these activities can be curbed and eradicated together,” he said.
