SIBU: Four local councils will be joining Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) in switching off their lights for an hour in conjunction with Sarawak Earth Hour on Saturday (March 26) starting from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

The councils are Kuching City South Council (MBKS), Miri City Council (MCC), Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC).

According to SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh, he suggested the idea to Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian in the same event broadcast live last year that was initially joined by MBKS and MCC.

“Last year, we invited Dr Sim to our live broadcast and then suggested to him that all councils join as well.

“Actually we only started with MBKS and MCC, but this year honestly to my surprise, thank you to the organising chairman, thank you everybody, they added so many councils.

“So this Earth Hour is quite special because it will be observed from Miri all the way to Kuching,” he said in a press conference on Thursday (March 24).

Ting also urged parents to take this chance to bring their children to join and educate them on the meaning of Earth Hour.

“I tell the parents, you must tell your children to go and switch off the light themselves. It is for the young, it is to educate the young about what Earth Hour is all about.

“It is our little part, doing our little part every year for only one hour.”

Tings hoped that in future, more councils would join the event and eventually turned it into an annual event that would be organised alternately by the councils.

For the record, SMC has been organising the Earth Hour event since 2009.

However, this year in collaboration with Junior Chamber International Sibu, SMC will organise it for the first time on a state level.
