KUCHING: The Batu 7 to Bau stretch is set for a future four-lane carriageway aiming to improve capacity and safety on the increasingly congested road.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang said the upgrade is very important because the existing road is narrow and cannot accommodate the increasing volume of vehicles, which results in daily traffic congestion.

“The government plans to construct a four-lane road. The proposed four-lane stretch will start from the traffic lights at Batu 7 to Bau, and then from Kampung Bumbok to Stephen Yong because that stretch is a key road,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters during a working visit to a landslide and burst-pipe site along Jalan Batu Kitang today.

He added that once completed, large vehicles will be able to use Jalan Stephen Yong to reach Bau smoothly, and the route will extend to Kampung Bumbok.

He also said that nearly the entire Jalan Stephen Yong has already been expanded to four lanes, except for a two-lane section between Bumbok and the Jalan Wee Boon Ping junction.

“For this section, the consultant has already been appointed and the design is more or less completed. The project now has reached the tender stage,” he said.
