KUCHING: The Sessions Court here sentenced four men to six years in prison each for an armed robbery at a mini-convenience store two years ago.

Chan Kwang Hui, 51, Hanson Kuek Char Ping, 28, Ewan Mortada, 31, and Nicky Lim Wei Chi, 31, each pleaded guilty before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman to the charge under Section 395 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397 of the same code.

If convicted, the Section provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and caning.

All four were charged with robbing a 33-year-old man of RM2,200 in cash, an identity card, a driving licence and an ATM card.

The offence took place at a mini-convenience store at Jalan Chan Bee at around 6.35am on Dec 3, 2023.

Judge Afidah ordered Kuek, Ewan and Lim to be jailed for six years with two strokes of the cane, while Chan received six years’ imprisonment without caning due to his age.

According to the case facts, the complainant and a friend were working at the store when three masked men entered. Ewan allegedly warned the complainant not to resist, threatening that he could be injured or killed.

The complainant, who was near the ice cream stand, saw two robbers armed with a samurai sword, knives, and machetes, while his friend was at the shop counter.

The robbers took several items, including a cash machine containing RM1,800, a backpack with important documents, and RM400 in cash, before fleeing in a car registered under Chan’s name.

A police report was lodged, leading to their arrest a few days later.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Xiang Hua prosecuted the case. Chan and Kuek were represented by counsel Lim Lian Kee, while Ewan and Lim were represented by Jong Yee Ling and Russell Lim.
