SARATOK: A journey home after work ended in tragedy when a boat carrying 10 workers capsized while crossing the Krian River on Friday evening, leaving four men missing.
The workers from a construction company were travelling from Sesang Jetty to Pusa Jetty at 5:30 pm when the boat went down midstream.
Six of them managed to survive by clinging onto a barge before being rescued by another passing boat.
They were identified as Sandi Putra, 26; Amirul, 20; Tadin, 50; Diki Sanjaya, 22; Dwi Moko, 39; and Krisna, 37 – all Indonesians.
As of press time, the other four men have yet to be found.
They are Mohd Asfar Sulaiman, 25, a Malaysian, and three Indonesians – Gunawan Pawadi, 35; Budianto Yapani, 50; and Karyono, 41.
In a statement, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak said personnel from the Saratok Fire and Rescue Station were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 6:13 pm.
However, due to safety considerations, the search and rescue (SAR) operation could not be launched immediately.
The operation commenced this morning (Saturday) at 7:40 am and efforts are ongoing to locate the missing men.
Following the incident, a police report was also lodged at Saratok Police Station on Friday.
