KUCHING: Sarawak’s women’s bowling team struck gold in the four-pin event on the third day of the Malaysian Deaf Games (SOPMA) XXII at Megalanes E-Mart, Batu Kawa, on Sunday.

The quartet of Nurlyanna Arnezza Suzalee, Nurul Farhanna Wahab, Aminah Abdul Rajak and Sia Chew Ing delivered a stellar performance to secure the top spot ahead of Federal Territory, who settled for silver, while Sabah claimed bronze.

In the men’s four-pin event, Federal Territory dominated through Liew Boon Ann, Chua Hock Seng, Mohamad Haziq Danish Rozainy and Syabil-Azam Syamsul-Azam, leaving Sarawak with silver and Selangor with bronze.

Sarawak’s medal tally grew further when Sia Chew Ing added another gold in the women’s All Events category. Sabah’s Masrumi Juri Azhar and Irene L. Gubud took silver and bronze respectively.

Meanwhile, Federal Territory continued their strong showing in the men’s All Events category, sweeping gold and silver through Syabil-Azam Syamsul-Azam and Mohamad Haziq Danish Rozainy, while Sarawak’s Agan Ballang Kapong bagged bronze.

The medals were presented by Malaysian Deaf Sports Association (MSDeaf) president Dr Ong Shin Ruenn, Sarawak Deaf Sports Association (SSDeaf) president Ko Ming Liang, and Sabah contingent head Soo Kok Heng.

This year’s SOPMA brings together 610 deaf athletes nationwide, competing in athletics, badminton, futsal, tenpin bowling and orienteering, with events held across Kuching and Samarahan.

First held in 1985, the biennial event returns to Sarawak as host for the 2025 edition.
