KUALA LUMPUR: Four landmark infrastructure projects in Sarawak have been shortlisted for the REAM Road Engineering Excellence Award 2026, recognising their engineering excellence and contribution to the state’s connectivity and development.
The projects are the Muara Lassa Bridge, Marudi Bridge, Kemena Bridge in Sebauh, and the Southern Access Road to Kuching International Airport.
Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) director Datuk Dr Cassidy Morris presented the four projects to the judging panel in Kuala Lumpur today (Jul 27) as part of the evaluation process for the prestigious award.
Organised by the Road Engineering Association of Malaysia (REAM), the award recognises outstanding road engineering projects based on criteria including planning, design, construction, innovation, safety, sustainability, as well as their economic and social impact.
According to Sarawak PWD, the projects’ inclusion on the shortlist reflected the department’s capability in planning, managing and delivering quality, resilient and high-impact infrastructure across the state.
“This achievement reflects the department’s continued commitment to delivering infrastructure that supports Sarawak’s long-term development while meeting the needs of today.
“It also recognises the dedication, expertise and collaboration of everyone involved in ensuring every project meets the highest standards of engineering, safety and quality,” it said in a Facebook post.
Among the shortlisted projects, the 2.43-kilometre Muara Lassa Bridge is Sarawak’s second-longest river-crossing bridge.
Since opening, it has reduced travel time across the river from up to 90 minutes by ferry to about five minutes by road while providing uninterrupted 24-hour access.
Meanwhile, the Marudi Bridge has replaced the ferry crossing over Batang Baram, eliminating waiting times of up to an hour and providing round-the-clock connectivity between Miri and Marudi.
The project was completed nine months ahead of its revised schedule and recorded zero lost-time injuries throughout construction.
The Kemena Bridge in Sebauh and the Southern Access Road to Kuching International Airport were also recognised for their roles in improving connectivity and supporting Sarawak’s continued economic growth.
