MIRI: In a significant operation on the evening of April 10 (last Thursday night), the Miri District Police detained a local man in his forties and three women aged between 20 and 40, following a raid on an Anchor Way Enterprise shop here.
According to Miri Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, the operation, spearheaded by the Miri District Commercial Crime Investigation Division, resulted in the seizure of a variety of items, including mobile phones, gold purchase receipts, multiple passports, identification card copies belonging to different individuals, clothing, watches, suspected counterfeit jewellery, and a Toyota Hilux.
The estimated value of the confiscated items, excluding the vehicle, stands at approximately RM15,000.
All four suspects are currently held in custody for four days while investigations are conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which pertains to cheating.
Should they be found guilty, they face a prison sentence of no less than one year and no more than ten years, as well as possible corporal punishment and fines.
In light of this incident, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and diligence when engaging in gold transactions, whether in-person or online.
Residents are advised to purchase only from licensed gold dealers, and conduct authenticity verification before completing any transaction.
It is also recommended to conduct such dealings in locations equipped with CCTV and witnesses, obtain purchase evidence such as receipts, and take photographs of the exchange between seller and buyer when conducting face-to-face transactions.
