KUCHING: The fourth phase of the statewide anti-rabies operation will run simultaneously in Serian and Simunjan from June 20 till 25.
According to a statement yesterday, the operation in Simunjan will be divided into two areas namely Sebuyau and Simunjan involving 104 villages and 12 farms.

Simunjan district officer Abdul Khalid Manap, in his speech at a rabies awareness programme yesterday, said the effectiveness and success of the rabies operation depends on the cooperation between the government and local residents.
Meanwhile, a veterinary officer from the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak, Dr Nicholas Jenek, who was also present at the event explained that rabies could infect all mammals including dogs and cats.
“However, the rabies operation only focuses on dogs because they tend to bite. Bites carrying the rabies virus can be fatal if not treated immediately.
“By 2022, the government is targeting zero rabies infection in humans, and zero rabies infection in animals in 2025,” he added.
The programme was attended by about 250 community leaders.
Any complaints on stray dogs can be forwarded to the DVS at 082-612949 or the State Disaster Management Committee WhatsApp number at 016-2051111.
