MIRI: A total of 100 local residents, the majority of them primary school students, received free haircuts during the two-day Barber Takeover 1.0 community programme, held on June 4 and June 5 at the Miri Visitor Information Centre.
The programme was an initiative made possible through the contribution of Piasau Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, aimed at easing the financial burden of the local community as schools prepare to reopen after the festive holidays.
Of the total beneficiaries, 41 people received free haircuts on the first day, while 59 others benefited on the second day.
According to POSH WORK event manager, Siti Hawa Sarkawi, the programme not only directly benefited the community but also provided a valuable platform for young barbers to showcase their talents.
“Programmes like this should be held regularly so the benefits can reach a wider audience, while also strengthening community spirit and entrepreneurship,” she said.
The Miri Visitor Information Centre, located on Jalan Melayu, here was chosen as the venue due to its role as a tourism information hub and a centre for various community activities.
Barber Takeover 1.0 also featured Free Haircut Sharing & Workshop Sessions, live DJ performances, talent showcases, coffee and pastry booths, food trucks, and other interactive activities for visitors.
The strong public turnout highlighted solid support for inclusive, community-friendly events.
The programme will culminate in its highlight event, the Barber Takeover Battle competition, scheduled for June 7 and 8.
This competition will gather talented barbers from Miri, Kuching, Bau, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur, and even international participants from Brunei Darussalam.
