SIBU: Member of Parliament for Sibu, Oscar Ling Chai Yew’s Service Centre, will be organising a “Free Health Screening” event at Rejang Park Commercial Centre for two consecutive days starting this Friday (Dec 13), from 7.30 am to 10.30 am.

Ling said that his service centre has previously held multiple free health screening sessions in various locations in Sibu and remote Iban rural areas, benefiting many residents.

“As usual, this health screening will include three common and essential tests: blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure.

“I encourage Sibu residents aged 18 and above to take advantage of the free health screenings,” he said in a statement today (Dec 10).

Ling emphasised the importance of prevention over cure, noting that early health screenings allow individuals to better understand their health status.

For more detailed health insights, he advised residents to visit diagnostic centres every two years for blood tests to develop a more comprehensive health care plan.

“Our bodies are incredible, with each organ closely interconnected and mutually influencing one another. The health of our blood vessels and circulation is especially related to blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.

“Therefore, we must not neglect our health and should minimise our consumption of sugar and sweets,” he added.

Ling highlighted that Malaysia’s government spends up to RM4 billion annually on treating diabetes, a significant expense.

He pointed out that if citizens take better care of their health by exercising more, practising good health habits, and consuming less sugar and soft drinks, the government could save on healthcare costs and redirect the funds to other national developments.

One of the main objectives of hosting these health screenings, Ling explained, is to raise public awareness about health.

“We hope everyone can enjoy good health and a happy life. Sibu residents are warmly encouraged to attend the screenings.

“For more accurate results, attendees are advised to come for the tests on an empty stomach and have breakfast afterward,” Ling said.
