KUCHING: The full details of Sarawak’s free tertiary education programme will be announced in November.

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the state government is in the final stages of implementing the initiative, with preparations nearly complete.

“The free tertiary education that we have been mentioning all this while is in the final stages.

“So far, only this phase has been worked on, as mentioned by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and we are ready for next year,” he said.

He said this during a press conference on Stem Catalysts-Raspberry Pi 2025 at Sarawak Skills Administration building here today.

On the first intake of the programme, Sagah said it is expected to begin between February and April next year, depending on individual university schedules.

Sagah also confirmed that there will be no quota for student intake, as long as applicants enroll in approved courses.

“In the initial phase, the focus will be on science-related programmes such as engineering, while selected arts programmes, including finance, accounting, law, and psychology, will also be part of the initiative.

“These selections are based on the needs of our people, with current industry demand pointing toward a higher requirement for science-related courses. However, this does not mean that other fields are not important.

“We have carefully identified the courses to align with industry needs, ensuring that graduates have better job prospects,” he said.

He added that universities will begin accepting applications after the release of SPM and STPM results.

“The full list of eligible programmes will only be disclosed in November. For now, let the students focus on their studies. We will provide the details at the right time,” he said.
