MIRI: Sarawak’s free tertiary education initiative will be accessible to all Sarawakians regardless of ethnic or social background.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the move addresses the urgent need to build a skilled local workforce capable of supporting Sarawak’s sustainable growth.

“This initiative is not merely about education—it’s about preparing our youth to become specialists in emerging fields and contributors to a sustainable economic future. Our vision is rooted in three key pillars: economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability,” he said during a Hari Raya gathering hosted by five Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) branches in Miri, here last night (Apr 5).

The Premier noted that while Sarawak has already been recognised by the World Bank as a high-income state ahead of its 2030 target, he believes the state must continue pushing forward.

“Are we satisfied? Not yet. We must aim to become one of the leading regions in Malaysia,” he said. “As we progress, we remain grounded. Our struggle is sincere—rooted in the love for Sarawak.”

He added that with his advancing age, the responsibility of continuing the state’s progress would fall to the younger generation.

“That is why PBB is grooming capable future leaders who are sincere in their mission to uplift the people.”

Abang Johari also reiterated that the state government will be allocating RM700 million to support Sarawakian students pursuing higher education, including a yearly tuition subsidy of RM15,000 per student and pocket money.

“We are moving forward with this plan. It is not a burden to Sarawak—I have calculated the figures,” he said.

In addressing global economic shifts, particularly the move away from free trade by countries such as the United States, the Premier stressed the importance of resilience.

“Although we export oil to Europe and other nations, Sarawak has been fortunate to escape the brunt of global economic pressures compared to Peninsular Malaysia.”
