KUCHING: The Sarawak government’s free tertiary education policy in 2026 will prioritise courses that meet the needs of the state’s job market.
In stating this, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said this is to ensure Sarawakian graduates will have a high employability rate.
“The demands of the labour market, especially towards developing our digital and green economy means that Sarawak will need more engineers and IT specialists in the process of transforming our economy,” he said this after officiating at a youth seminar here on Sunday (June 9).
He said that Sarawak also needs a lot of technicians and skilled workforce particularly in the downstream industries.
“As such, I encourage youths to pursue STEM and TVET courses after SPM as there are abundant opportunities for graduates with these qualifications,” he said.
He also called on the young in Sarawak to contribute towards nation building by supporting policies such as the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
“This is to promote green sustainable inclusive growth and a decent high standard of living for all. Anchored on these strategic directions, we as ‘anak Sarawak’ can complement nation building efforts as a shared responsibility,” he said.
Yap thanked Saberkas Kota Sentosa branch for organising the seminar as many post-SPM students are clueless about what to study and how to choose the right course that will equip them for a successful future.
“Choosing the right career is a vital first step for your future. This can be an overwhelming task if you are unprepared.
“With the wide variety of career choices available to a student, the time after SPM can be a confusing one if not guided properly.
“Preparations should have been made even before this time but fear not, it is still not too late if you have not decided on a career path,” he said.
During the event, Yap handed over a Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant of RM5,000 to Saberkas Kota Sentosa branch to support them in organising more community, training, welfare and charity events.
