SRI AMAN: Residents and worshippers in Sarawak are urged to be thankful for the continuous financial assistance provided by UNIFOR (Unit for Other Religions) to upgrade and maintain houses of worship across the state.
Balai Ringin assemblyman Datuk Snowdan Lawan expressed his appreciation to the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS)-led state government, headed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for safeguarding the freedom of religious practices and worship.
He also highlighted the role of UNIFOR, under Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, for consistently providing funding to support religious communities.
“Every year during the budget period, UNIFOR allocates grants to churches, mosques and temples for upgrades and repairs.
“Last year, St Stephen Church in Pantu received RM800,000 for renovations, and I am pleased to note that the funds were wisely utilised and all works completed,” he said.
He made the remarks while officiating at the Majlis Merarau, a church fundraising lunch organised by the St Stephen Church community at Dewan Sri Pantu on Saturday (Nov 8).
On development matters, Snowdan revealed that the new Pantu district office will be relocated near Kampung Sungai Merah along the Pan Borneo Highway, with preliminary works funded by SADA at RM5 million.
He also noted that the construction of Panggau Pantu (a new hall), costing RM2.2 million under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP), is currently underway.
Snowdan also commended the local Christian community for their support of the fundraising event and encouraged continued contributions through offerings, tithes and pledges.
To assist the event, he granted RM10,000 to the church’s main committee, RM5,000 to the Women’s Fellowship and provided air-conditioning units for the church’s use.
Also present at the event were community leaders, including Penghulu Johnny Lumi, Penghulu Obeng, village chieftains, and members of the Christian community.
