KUCHING: Every generation of Argentine football seems to produce heroes.

The names change, the faces change, but one thing remains constant – Argentina always finds a way to win.

From Mario Kempes and Ossie Ardiles to Daniel Passarella, Diego Maradona, Claudio Caniggia, Gabriel Batistuta, Hernán Crespo and now Lionel Messi, Argentina’s football history has been shaped by players who understand the weight of expectation.

For decades, the famous blue and white shirt has carried more than just a football team. It carries the hopes of a nation where football is not merely a sport, but a way of life.

Messi may have completed the story by leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, but the winning mentality was built long before his era.

Kempes inspired Argentina’s first World Cup triumph in 1978, while Maradona carried the nation to glory in 1986 with performances that remain among football’s greatest individual achievements.

Later generations continued the tradition, producing players who wore the shirt with pride, passion and the responsibility of following in the footsteps of legends.

That mentality was visible once again in this 2026 World Cup campaign.

Argentina refused to surrender when their backs were against the wall, fighting through difficult moments and producing crucial comebacks, including against Cabo Verde, Egypt and England in the semi-final.

They showed composure, resilience and the belief that no match is lost until the final whistle.

That is the Argentine identity.

They do not simply rely on individual brilliance. They rely on a culture built through generations – one where pressure is embraced, challenges are overcome, and winning becomes part of their DNA.

Every player who represents Argentina inherits the same expectation: to compete, to fight and to believe.

Messi’s greatness will forever define this era, but Argentina’s story has always been bigger than one player.

It is a story of champions before him and champions after him – a football nation that continues to produce heroes when the world is watching.

And when they step onto the biggest stage again on Monday morning Malaysian time against Spain for the final, they will carry not only Messi’s brilliance, but decades of belief passed down from one generation to the next.
