KUCHING: The state’s strategic planning through its Athlete Development Programme has proven to be fruitful following the success of Sarawakians Bonnie Bunyau Gustin and Jong Yee Khie in bringing home a gold and silver medal respectively during the recent Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said among the programmes held under the development of Para athletes is the Elite Senior Development Programme (Pes) which helps prepare Para athletes to participate in international tournaments.

“This also includes assistance in terms of training, participating in tournaments or outdoor competitions, nutritional consultations, strength and conditioning training as well as mental training.

“In addition, the Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Ministry (KWKPK) has held various initiatives and programmes including the Talent and Identification Programme to identify the talents and potential of athletes in Sarawak who can compete at the state and national levels.

“Appreciation to both Ministries who always work together and give their best in ensuring the success of the athletes in Sarawak,” he said when speaking at the incentive presentation ceremony for Sarawak athletes who won medals at the Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020 held at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here on Tuesday (Nov 2).

Abdul Karim, who spoke highly of the duo and their numerous achievements, said their success also hinged on the hard work, determination and enthusiasm shown by the two Para athletes.

“Despite all of our guidance, I don’t think they will achieve this level of success without their abilities and strong will,” he added.

He said the incentive given serves as appreciation and support to the athletes who have worked hard in their training sessions as well as working harder to win medals at the international level.

“It is our hope that this event and incentive will inspire all Sarawak athletes in particular to give their best in any tournament, especially at the international level in the future,” said Abdul Karim.

It is learnt that both Bonnie and Jong will be attending training in Bukit Jalil in preparation for the upcoming World Championship Georgia in Russia.

“May they continue to achieve success and make Sarawak and Malaysia famous. I recommend that our athletes remain the best to help Sarawak continue to be known globally as a ‘sports powerhouse’.”
