KUCHING: The launch of Endowment Fund Sarawak by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday is a good start for Sarawak to prepare its younger generation, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
“When they grow up or when they are 18 years old, they will have the fund to go to university or technical school. It is also a good start for small businesses,” he said when met after the launching and presentation of the endowment fund at a hotel here yesterday.
“Every Sarawakian child will have a fund. Hopefully, in the future, there will be other programmes that can help the new generations.
“If the state’s economy improves, we can come up with other forms of assistance,” said Lee.
He also praised Johari for initiating the fund and hoped to see more people-centric programmes launched in the near future.
Meanwhile, Kota Samarahan Municipal Council chairman Dato Peter Minos said that the fund was a good initiative.
“It is a good initiative for the low-income families. Their children will benefit by the age of 18 with about RM3,000 to RM4,000 in hand. That is the time when they pursue tertiary education and will need that amount of money.
“Parents can also top up the amount for the fund. So that is very good. It is looking to the future and caring for the future. It is a good initiative,” he said.
