THE establishment of the Sustainable Resources and Wastes Management Fund will play a central role in supporting Sarawak’s shift towards a more sustainable future under the Sustainable Resources and Waste Management Bill 2025.
Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa said the fund would enable continuous support for the newly formed Sustainable Resources and Wastes Management Authority, particularly in promoting sustainable practices and strengthening waste reduction efforts across the state.
He said the Bill, described as a landmark legislation, comes at a time when Sarawak faces mounting environmental pressures, including the strain on natural resources, environmental degradation and the growing impact of climate change.
“The Bill outlines a comprehensive framework that includes the declaration of controlled sustainable resources, licensing requirements and enforcement mechanisms.

“These measures are essential to ensure our resources are managed responsibly and sustainably,” Dr Rayong said this when debating on the Bill during the DUN sitting here today.
He added that the legislation also introduces clear penalties for non-compliance, including fines and imprisonment, while also safeguarding informers and those assisting in enforcement.
“As we implement this Bill, we will be creating new opportunities for our people, promoting sustainable economic growth and protecting our environment.
“We will work with communities, industries and stakeholders to encourage sustainable practices and reduce waste.”
He also noted that the state would be investing in education and awareness programmes to cultivate a culture of sustainability among Sarawakians.
Expressing full support for the Bill, Dr Rayong said he was confident that with the backing of all members, the legislation would help realise the vision of a sustainable Sarawak.
