SIBU: Malaysia needs to accelerate its efforts towards sustainable mobility, so as not to be left behind in the global trend towards net-zero emissions, says Bawang Assan Assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

He pointed out the rapid transformation of the automotive world — through electric vehicles, hydrogen technology and smart mobility systems require Malaysia to build a new ecosystem that supports innovation and sustainable development.

The transition to sustainable mobility including electric vehicles is not just about new technologies, but about building an ecosystem that allows innovation to flourish, encompassing R&D collaboration, infrastructure investment and workforce retraining,” he said at opening ceremony the 2nd National Electric Vehicle Forum and Workshop 2025 held at a prominent hotel here yesterday (Nov 8).

The event organised by the Sibu Automobile Repairers Association (SARA) was attended by about 300 automobile workshop operators throughout the country.

Meanwhile, Wong added that the government plays an important role as a facilitator through clear policies, incentives and strategic partnerships with the private sector to encourage investment and innovation.

He stressed that this effort must be inclusive and balanced between regions, with Sarawak having the potential to become a leader in the development of green mobility based on renewable energy sources such as hydroelectricity and hydrogen.

“Sarawak can play a major role in developing the country’s green mobility solutions,” he reiterated.

Wong also cited on the importance of synergy between industry and academic institutions, whereby they must work together to produce a new generation of engineers, scientists and entrepreneurs to drive the transformation of the country’s automotive sector.

He was confident that the results of the discussions and sharing at the event would help make Malaysia a leader in sustainable mobility in the ASEAN region.

“I applaud the organiser for bringing together such a distinguished group of participants. Your dedication to advancing knowledge, policy and innovation in the vehicle industry is truly commendable.

“Let us together build not just better vehicles, but a better future for the country and the world,” he added.

SARA chairman Penghulu, Teo Nging Poh and organising chairman, Tieh Sing Hin were among those present.
