KUCHING: Sarawak is leveraging innovation and social cohesion to drive sustainable growth across energy, education, and agriculture.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state’s development approach mirrors the concept of fusion, where various elements combine to create something stronger and more powerful.

“Fusion is a combination of various gases into one,” he explained, drawing a parallel between next-generation fusion energy and Sarawak’s own hydrogen initiatives driven by the state’s renewable water resources.

Abang Johari delivers his speech.

He said this during the welcoming dinner of the 37th Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) triennial general assembly at Imperial Hotel last night (Nov 14).

He said fusion also reflects Sarawak’s social fabric.

“All Sarawakians, regardless of background, social status, or faith, fuse together as one to protect Sarawak and its people,” he said, crediting this unity with enabling effective governance, independent resource management, and ambitious development goals.

“With this shared understanding, we prioritise Sarawak’s unity. We govern according to our own framework. When others face challenges, we face them together because we are united – like being part of the same cake, the same mould, the same form.

“Our actions are coordinated: what affects one affects all. This fusion allows us to move forward,” he added, extending the metaphor to leadership.

This spirit of unity has underpinned forward-looking initiatives in education, agriculture, and infrastructure. From providing free education at Sarawak universities to adopting mechanised farming methods that boost productivity, the Premier said these efforts reflect the state’s ability to meet modern challenges while maintaining cohesion.

“Because we are fused together, we can move forward,” he said, highlighting Sarawak’s continued progress in energy, economy, education, and social development.
