SIBU: The Merdeka Futsal Championship here, held for the first time on National Day, was part of ongoing efforts by the Sibu Anti-Drug Squad (SADS) to build a drug-free society while empowering the community’s mental and social well-being.

The tournament, organised by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Sibu District took place last Sunday (Aug 31) at the Kampung Nangka Futsal Court.

It brought together 128 SADS members and youths from across Sibu, who formed 16 teams.

SADS chairman Raden Khairulzaman Raden Bustari officiated at the event, which also received strong support from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Nasi Ulam Sibu, Rizqi FT and Gallop FC.

On the court, Pongkos FT clinched the championship title, with SKUAD KFR finishing runner-up, while Panda Selek and TPX FT shared third place.

SADS in a statement said the tournament also aims to raise awareness of the importance of sports in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as instilling the spirit of volunteerism among youths.

The squad added that such activities help strengthen ties between SADS and the youth community.

Other initiatives held in conjunction with the tournament included a Casual Chat session with youths in Kampung Nangka and the launch of SADS’s 5,000-Member Campaign.
