KUCHING: The Second Sarawak Inter-Secondary Schools U17 Boys Futsal Championship 2025 serves not only as a competitive platform for young athletes, but also as a key step in preparing Sarawak’s talent pool for SUKMA and future national-level events.

Bandar Kuching Member of Parliament, Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen, told Sarawak Tribune at the opening of the tournament, at the Sarawak State Sports School (SMK Tabuan Jaya) today (10 May), on the importance of providing structured opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills and gain vital tournament exposure.
“I believe the best way to prepare for a major competition is to build platforms where our athletes can showcase their potential and talent,” said Dr Yii.
He added that such competitions not only give players exposure and experience in a competitive environment, but also help in talent identification for the upcoming SUKMA in Selangor and other future sporting events.
“These platforms are important not just for sports development, but also for community building.
“We see youth from different backgrounds coming together, united by their passion for the sport and their shared aspiration to represent Sarawak,” he said.
Dr Yii added that his office has been actively supporting grassroots sporting events across multiple disciplines to encourage healthy lifestyles and positive engagement among young people.
The two-day futsal tournament runs from May 10 to May 11, featuring 40 school teams from across Sarawak competing for honours and the chance to be noticed by state-level selectors.
