KUCHING: A vibrant mix of futuristic and traditional elements took centre stage at the colourful Kuching City Street Parade held yesterday evening (Aug 16).

Hartini Adurahman, 44, contingent head for Legend of Lights – The Glorious 40s, said her team is showcasing the theme ‘Rimba Rhythm’,  a fusion of futuristic style with the natural beauty of Sarawak’s rainforest.

“Our outfits are futuristic because we want to highlight the future era, while still preserving the essence of Sarawak’s jungle,” she told Sarawak Tribune when met.

She said that their contingent comprises 40 participants, including former dancers, cultural performers, and young child dancers.

“Most of us are freelancers, coming together from different backgrounds to form this team,” she added.

Meanwhile, Mohd Amirul Rashid bin Abdullah, 26, representing Amanah Khairat Yayasan Budaya Melayu Sarawak, said their contingent focuses on preserving Malay traditions, with Gajah Oleng as one of the main highlights.

According to him, their team consists of 40 members, ranging in age from just seven years old to those in their 20s.

Another crowd-puller was the Kejiranan Mesra N8 Satok contingent, led by 49-year-old Abdul Mokhtarin Anuar, who appeared in a full astronaut costume.’

He explained that their futuristic-themed performance symbolized Sarawak’s first astronaut and a Sarawakian space vessel.

“At the same time, we also featured a rocket display and a planet project. Our group is a mix of children, adults, and senior citizens,” he said, adding that the contingent has 33 members.

The parade, themed “Parade of Lights” was officially flagged off at Travillion Commercial Centre by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Zaiedi Suhaili and Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) director Ramzi Abdillah featuring 52 contingents.
