LUNDU: Gading A justified their top billing by capturing the Men’s Open Volleyball Championship 2025, which concluded on Sunday.
Bolstered by several national players, the favourites were tested by Debak’s Infinity A in an intense final at the SK Sampadi volleyball court before emerging victorious 21-14, 21-19.
The triumph saw Gading A pocket RM1,000 in prize money and medals, while Infinity A settled for second place, earning RM700 and medals after a strong showing throughout the tournament.
The Cops secured third place after defeating CVS in the playoff for third and fourth, collecting RM500 and medals.
The inaugural tournament, organised by the Sampadi-Kangkar Volleyball Club, attracted 22 teams from Lundu and surrounding areas, including Saribas.
Organising chairman Mohamad Faizul said the overwhelming response exceeded expectations for a first-time event.
“Despite this being our maiden edition, the turnout and level of competition were very encouraging,” he said. “We received strong support from volleyball teams around Kuching, and it was pleasing to see teams from as far as Debak and Pusa making the journey to Sampadi.”
Faizul also expressed appreciation to all stakeholders who contributed to the smooth running of the championship.
“I would like to thank the organising committee, officials, sponsors and volunteers for their commitment and cooperation throughout the two-day tournament.
“On behalf of the organisers, we apologise for any shortcomings during the event,” he said.
He added that the championship brought wider benefits beyond the court.
“Events like this not only provide a competitive platform for athletes but also help small traders promote their products.
“At the same time, it plays a role in stimulating sports tourism and community activities in the Sampadi area,” he added.
