KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak’s “Gateway to Borneo” business networking sessions engaged over 160 travel agents and tour operators in Johor, Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, with more than 15 Sarawak tourism partners.

The initiative aims to boost domestic travel ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026), as Malaysia targets 43 million visitor arrivals.

The sessions positioned West Malaysian agents as Sarawak’s extended sales partners, showcasing the state’s diverse tourism offerings under the pillars of Culture, Adventure, Nature, Food and Festivals (CANFF) and promoting curated packages for domestic travellers.

Director of Marketing (ASEAN & Domestic) Gustino Basuan said the sessions focused on connecting people, products and possibilities as VM2026 approaches.

“It allows people to come together, exchange ideas and explore practical ways to strengthen domestic travel to Sarawak,” he said.

Trade discussions highlighted improved connectivity through AirBorneo, UNESCO-recognised heritage sites and sustainability initiatives including hydrogen and electric public transport systems.

The Strategic Partnership Collaboration Fund (SPCF) was also introduced to support joint marketing campaigns and promotions.

The multi-location B2B sessions included one-to-one meetings, destination updates and product showcases, allowing Sarawak suppliers to interact directly with West Malaysian agents to drive package development and bookings ahead of VM2026.

By engaging Peninsular trade partners, Sarawak has strengthened its domestic tourism network and laid a foundation for growth in 2026.

The state aims to leverage these partnerships to offer meaningful travel experiences that highlight its unique cultures, natural wonders and vibrant attractions.
