BINTULU: The Gawai celebration should be viewed as more than just a harvest festival as it stands as a symbol of identity, cultural resilience and unity in the Dayak community.

Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, said Gawai reflects the spirit of a community rooted in ancestral heritage while remaining open to renewal in line with the times.

“It is a manifestation of culture, identity, and the collective spirit of the Dayak people towards their homeland – from traditional rhythms in the longhouse to the sharing of heritage dishes,” he said in a special message in conjunction with the Gawai celebration.

He stressed that traditions like Gawai must not only be remembered but also kept alive and developed so they remain relevant and continue to contribute to the people’s well-being.

“Culture is not merely a relic of the past, but the soul of the present and the seed for the future.

“We must treat it as a compass for development that safeguards values, identity and solidarity,” he added.

Tiong said his ministry is committed to empowering the development of the Dayak community through inclusive and sustainable approaches, including homestay programmes, cultural tourism, and the revival of traditional crafts through modern methods.

These efforts, he noted, not only promote Dayak heritage on the global stage but also create job opportunities, stimulate the local economy, and empower youth through skills training and entrepreneurship.

“Through a comprehensive approach, we aim to produce a generation that is deeply rooted in culture yet confident in facing global challenges,” he said.

He also expressed appreciation to cultural figures, spiritual leaders, and senior citizens who continue to guide the community with wisdom and dedication.

“Because of your contributions, Gawai is not only celebrated but has become a symbol of identity and belonging for the Dayak people,” he remarked.

In addition, Tiong who is Bintulu Member of Parliament emphasised that true national progress lies in the well-being of the people, social harmony, and cultural continuity.

“We must ensure that no community is left behind in development.

“Every citizen, including the Dayak people, should move forward together in the nation’s journey of progress,” he said, calling on all Malaysians to unite in the spirit of Gawai in building an inclusive and harmonious country.
