PADAWAN: Gawai Dayak is not merely a harvest festival but a tribute to heritage, life and shared values that unite Sarawakians regardless of background.

“This celebration reminds us of the importance of community and togetherness, no matter our differences,” said Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman Tan Kai.

“It is also a time to reflect on our roots, honour our elders, and strengthen the values that shape us as Sarawakians,” he said at the council’s Gawai Open House celebration held in the PMC compound here on Tuesday (July 1).

He stressed that the festival should be viewed as a time for reflection and renewed commitment towards a more harmonious and sustainable future.

“Each individual plays a role in building a resilient community, whether through environmental stewardship, youth empowerment, cultural preservation, or educational development.

“Let Gawai be more than a celebration of our harvest; let it serve as a catalyst for us to sow the seeds of a better future for the generations to come,” he said.

Tan commended the PMC Club for successfully injecting new spirit into this year’s Gawai celebration through creative and diverse booths set up by each department.

“I applaud the club for their initiative and active participation, which made today’s event more festive and meaningful.

“Thank you, PMC Club, for your dedication in fostering camaraderie among staff while supporting our collective goals,” he added.

Tan also extended his appreciation to all government and private agencies that have consistently worked alongside the council in efforts to develop Padawan into a cleaner, safer and more sustainable district.

He said continued commitment from all parties is crucial to achieving long-term development goals for the area.

The celebration was attended by about 100 people, including Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin, Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim, Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang, and Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.
