BINTANGOR: The Gawai Antu tradition continued to be solemnly observed by the Dayak community last Saturday as residents of Rumah Dangat, Sungai Kawi gathered to perform rituals honouring their ancestors.

The ceremony involved about 10 longhouse doors, with participants carrying out the observance in accordance with customs and practices inherited from previous generations, reflecting the commitment of maintaining traditional values within the community.

Gawai Antu is one of the most significant rituals in Dayak culture, observed as a mark of respect for ancestral spirits and as a symbol of the rich cultural heritage that continues to be upheld despite the passage of time.

Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, who was present at the event, said the continued observance of Gawai Antu demonstrated the community’s determination to ensure that traditional practices remain alive and meaningful.

“I commend the residents of Rumah Dangat for their commitment in observing traditions that form the foundation of the community’s identity and cultural legacy,” he said.

He added that such observances not only preserve ancestral heritage, but also strengthen ties among longhouse residents and neighbouring communities, while reflecting unity and mutual respect among the people.
