SERIAN: The recent Gawai celebrations in Kampung Taee and Kampung Panchor Dayak have demonstrated the enduring unity of the Bidayuh community.
Serian District Council chairman Datuk Peter Minos described the celebrations as a clear reflection of a community coming together with shared purpose, reaffirming their cultural identity and solidarity.
“At Kampung Taee, more than a thousand villagers braved the midday sun to take part in a vibrant Gawai parade. Meanwhile, Kampung Panchor Dayak celebrated with a lively festival at their well-known hot spring, drawing locals and visitors alike,” he said.
Minos pointed out that such initiatives—driven purely by the community’s own efforts—are a clear reflection of the Bidayuhs’ enduring unity and collective will to preserve their heritage.
“Imagine if this same spirit of cooperation and goodwill could be channelled into other common causes. The results would be remarkable,” he said.
Minos, who has been observing Bidayuh socio-political developments since the 1970s, said this unity has been steadily nurtured over the decades.
He also said unity is the key to both survival and progress, particularly for smaller communities like the Bidayuh.
“Today, all Bidayuh elected representatives—both ADUNs and MPs—are part of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). On top of that, the Gawai celebration is now wholeheartedly embraced by Bidayuh communities everywhere.
“It’s the desire to stand together in facing present challenges and an uncertain future that keeps a community strong. I can say that unity through Gawai has truly arrived for the Bidayuhs and may they continue to strengthen this bond and thrive in the years to come,” he added.
