KUCHING: The festive spirit of Gawai Dayak lit up Sarawak’s skies and terminals as Tourism Malaysia, in collaboration with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), brought cultural cheer to Kuching International Airport and Sibu Airport yesterday (June 1).

Held in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign, the event aimed to share the joy of Gawai with both domestic and international travellers by showcasing Sarawak’s rich heritage.

Travellers arriving at the Arrival Hall were greeted with traditional hospitality and treated to festive goodies, including the iconic Sarawak kek lapis (layered cake), along with promotional materials for VM2026.

Joining the celebration at Sibu Airport were Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Special Officer Agatha Ting, Tourism Malaysia Sarawak director Rubiah Tul’Adwiyah Md Yusof, as well as representatives from partner agencies and tourism associations.

Guests were also treated to vibrant cultural performances by a local dance troupe, which added colour and rhythm to the airport atmosphere.

Celebrated annually on June 1 and 2, the Gawai Dayak Festival is a key part of Tourism Malaysia’s efforts to spotlight Sarawak’s cultural diversity and extend a heartfelt invitation to travellers to experience the state’s unique traditions and warm hospitality.
