BINTULU: The Gawai Dayak celebration in the Jepak state constituency is more than just a traditional festival.

It also serves as a platform to foster unity, promote gratitude, and honour the cultural diversity that defines the Sarawak community.

Iskandar rolls up the ceremonial mat, marking the close of the Gawai celebration.

Jepak Assemblyman, Iskandar Turkee, said Gawai is not only a celebration of the harvest, but also a meaningful expression of thankfulness to God, respect for ancestors, and a cultural tradition that transcends race and religion.

“Gawai is a time for us to reconnect with our roots. It reminds us of the values of brotherhood, mutual cooperation and respect.

“In Jepak, Gawai is celebrated not just by the Iban community, but also by the Malays, Melanau and Chinese. This is the true beauty of Sarawak,” he said.

He shared this during the Ngiling Bidai event hosted by the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) for the Jepak constituency.

The event was held at a restaurant on Saturday night with the theme ‘Beserakup Mai Pemansang Oohhaa Gawai’.

Iskandar noted that the presence of people from various ethnic and religious backgrounds reflected the strong spirit of unity and togetherness among the residents of Jepak, regardless of their beliefs or political affiliations.

“Tonight we sat at the same table, exchanged greetings, and laughed together. This proves that we are one big family.

“Unity cannot rely on slogans alone. It must be nurtured through action and mutual understanding,” he said.

Explaining the significance of Ngiling Bidai, he added that it does not mark the end of Gawai but symbolises a fresh beginning and a renewed commitment to community values.

“We may be rolling up the mats, but we are also unfolding a new spirit.

“This is the time to continue embracing the values of gotong-royong and consensus that are at the heart of the Jepak community,” he said.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to serving all members of the community equally.

“I never ask who you support. I only ask what kind of help you need. Gawai teaches us to be grateful and assist others regardless of background.

“My door and my heart are always open. Come, let’s sit down and find a way forward for Jepak’s future,” he added.
