SIBU: The Sibu Division Road Safety Council (MKJR) officially launched a Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebrations at the PETRONAS Powerfill Enterprise petrol station on Jalan Lanang Barat here on Friday.

Organised by the Sibu Divisional Resident’s Office in partnership with PETRONAS, the campaign aims to deliver road safety messages directly to motorists while urging the public to remain cautious throughout the festive period.

Sibu Divisional Resident and MKJR Chairman, Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman, said that according to statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), 683 road accidents were recorded in the division between January and April this year.

“Out of the number, 13 fatalities were recorded and the number is alarming,” he said in his speech at the event.

He added that MKJR is committed to reducing accident rates through continuous education, training programmes, and awareness campaigns.

He also recommended stricter law enforcement and the adoption of technologies such as traffic cameras.

“Each statistic is more than just a number; it represents lives and families torn apart by loss.

“It is imperative that we all play our part in minimising accident risks,” he said.

He also called for proper maintenance of road infrastructure, including traffic lights and warning signs, to prevent accidents caused by faulty equipment.

As part of the initiative, 200 gift packs and 50 helmets were distributed to road users to better engage with the community and reinforce the importance of road safety.
