KUCHING: The long-awaited dream of a dedicated motor racing circuit in Sarawak is finally becoming a reality.

Sarawak Motorsports Association president Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim expressed his gratitude for the efforts that led to the agreement on new land for the construction of a formal racing circuit in Gedong.

The initiative, championed by PBB Youth chief Miro Simuh, has received approval from Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, marking a significant milestone for motorsports in the state.

Ahmad was speaking at a press conference on the Super GP Borneo Star Drift Series X National Drift Series at BCCK Kuching on Thursday (Nov 28).

He acknowledged the persistent issue that has hindered the development of a motorsport facility in Sarawak for decades – land.

“Our biggest challenge for the last 20-30 years has always been finding land for the circuit, whether to buy, rent, or secure sponsorship,” he explained.

However, he was quick to highlight the recent breakthrough.

“Alhamdulillah, the Premier has agreed, there’s a land, it will be given for this purpose, and we will keep it in good faith.”

The land, located near the Gedong Mini Isthmus, will complement the existing sports complex, which includes a stadium and a bridge, providing the perfect location for a motor racing circuit.

Ahmad added that he hopes the Sarawak Sports Council (SSC) will take ownership of the land and manage the construction of the circuit, with support from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development.

“Hopefully, the Sarawak Sports Council (SSC) will own the land and handle the budget, with support from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development.

“Once the construction is complete, we hope to be involved in the consultation process, including the design and safety features.

“We are truly looking forward to it—it’s about time,” he added, noting that the motorsports community has been waiting for such a development since 2010.

Abang Johari has also approved the construction of a second circuit in the Sibuti area.

For the record, he made these announcements during the PBB Youth Assembly on Nov 10.

While the land has been identified and the plans are in motion, Ahmad emphasised that funding and approval for the design and construction are the next steps.

“This is a significant step forward for motorsports in Sarawak, and we will work together with the Ministry to bring this vision to life.”

“It’s a bright future ahead for Sarawak motorsport. The circuit is going to come up, it’s going to be a reality,” Ahmad added.
