BELAGA: The Sarawak Basic Necessities Assistance (SKAS) initiative reflects the Sarawak government’s commitment to help the people, especially those in need, so they can afford their basic necessities and enjoy a better quality of life.

Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang said the programme not only provides financial assistance but also brings hope and relief to families in need throughout Sarawak, including in Belaga District.

He thanked Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his commitment to continue the SKAS programme despite the current uncertain economic situation.

“This programme is a special contribution by the Sarawak government with a total allocation of RM640 million, channelled to eligible households, single individuals and elderly persons without spouses,” he said during the launch of the SKAS 2026 programme for the Belaga district here recently.

Liwan, who is also Belaga assemblyman, reminded recipients to make the best use of the assistance and practise prudent spending in facing the increasingly challenging cost of living.

He added that the SKAS assistance will be distributed in stages, at the beginning of the year, mid-year and at the end of the year.

He said that individuals who have yet to be listed as recipients may seek assistance from officers on duty at the programme venue to check their status or make enquiries regarding SKAS.

Meanwhile, Liwan encouraged the community to learn how to use the S Pay Global application, which is used for the distribution of SKAS assistance.

For those who are not yet familiar with the application, he said help can be obtained from officers at the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI).

He also suggested that NADI organise more activities to improve digital skills among local residents, as the use of digital applications has become increasingly important today.
