SARIKEI: The recognition of the Sarawak Delta Geopark is creating opportunities for local products to reach international markets and contribute to the state’s economic growth.

Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the recognition not only enhances Sarawak’s tourism appeal but also adds value to broader economic development.

He added that although the geopark is centred in Kuching, its benefits extend to other areas, including the central region.

“Various local products such as smoked fish, traditional food, seafood and handicrafts have strong potential to penetrate global markets,” he said.

Len said this when attending the closing ceremony of the Randau Komuniti Programme 2026 organised by the Sarikei-level Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) at Kampung Selalang Community Hall here yesterday (May 3).

He also shared his experience during a promotional programme in Paris, where Sarawak products received strong response and were sold out within a short period.

“There is very high demand, but the main challenge is ensuring sufficient and continuous supply to meet market needs,” he said.

He stressed the need for more systematic and consistent production planning throughout the year to avoid supply imbalances.

He added that stable pricing depends on the ability of producers to sustain production rather than relying on seasonal cycles.

Len also urged local entrepreneurs to increase production capacity and improve product quality to meet international standards.

He said the opportunities from the geopark recognition should be fully utilised to boost community income and strengthen the rural economy.
