KUALA LUMPUR: Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is still unsure whether he will feature in the upcoming All Star Legends match at National Stadium Bukit Jalil this Oct 3, saying a decision on his availability is expected within the next two to three weeks.

The former England midfielder said he hoped to be part of the exhibition event, which is set to gather several former football stars for a match involving Manchester United and Liverpool legends.

“I think it’s a fantastic event in a couple of months’ time. I’m hoping to be available to come over to be a part of it. I should have a decision in two, three weeks,” he said during AllStar Legends Press Conference here today.

Despite the match being labelled as an exhibition game, Gerrard stressed that former elite players still carry a strong competitive spirit whenever they step onto the pitch.

“We don’t get prizes as such, but there’s always a winner at the end of the game. Once that first whistle goes, all the friendlies stop for 90 minutes because that passion and fight never leaves you, especially with Manchester United players on the opposition,” he said.

Gerrard also highlighted the importance of maintaining a winning mentality, saying passion, sacrifice and the hunger to compete are qualities every aspiring athlete must possess.

Meanwhile, on the commercial growth of football in Southeast Asia, Gerrard said the region remains important to the global football landscape due to the passion shown by supporters.

“You can see the passion and feel it. Football globally is so big and it’s important for ex-players to still visit places like this, connect with supporters and give something back,” he added.

Players unveiled for both teams include Jaap Stam, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Ian Harte representing the AllStar Premier Legends, while the AllStar World Legends will feature global stars such as Dida, Javier Saviola and Maicon.

The full players’ line-up alongside details for event tickets will be announced closer to the match date. Additionally, exclusive event merchandise will be available for purchase online, giving fans the opportunity to commemorate the occasion.
