MIRI: SMK Pujut has recently launched its ‘Get Into Rugby’ programme for the new academic year, in collaboration with the Miri Division Rugby Association (MDRA), Sarawak Sports Corporation, and supported by the Sarawak Rugby Union.

The initiative aims to introduce the sport to students in an engaging, accessible way.

The session focused on building fundamental rugby skills through fun, energetic games, challenging the common misconception of rugby as a rough and complex sport.

Instead, students were introduced to basic skills such as hand-eye coordination, passing accuracy, and spatial awareness, with laughter and cheering filling the air.

Brenda Rachel Marie, teacher advisor of SMK Pujut Rugby Club, emphasised on the programme’s goal.

“We wanted to show the students that rugby is more than just a sport; it is a fun and dynamic way to stay active and build camaraderie.

“The ‘Get Into Rugby’ programme offers a non-intimidating platform to introduce basic skills, making it enjoyable for all, regardless of prior sporting experience,” she said.

The session saw enthusiastic participation from both boys and girls, with teamwork and communication at the forefront of the activities.

Students supported each other and celebrated their successes together, embodying the core values of rugby—respect, integrity, passion, solidarity, and discipline.

As part of World Rugby’s global initiative to expand the sport, SMK Pujut’s programme reflected the school’s commitment to provide students with opportunities to explore new sports and develop essential life skills.

The success of the introductory session laid a promising foundation for the establishment of a more structured rugby programme at the school in the future.

MDRA invites students interested in learning more about rugby to connect through their Facebook page for information on upcoming sessions and opportunities to get involved.

This exciting new venture brings the promise of action, teamwork, and fun to the SMK Pujut school community.
