BAU: A site known locally as the ‘Ghost Cave’, long associated with a tragic chapter from the Brooke era, is set to be developed into a new tourism attraction in Bau, according to Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister said the cave holds both historical and emotional significance.

The cave, located next to LePapa in Bau, was once a hiding place for locals during a military retaliation.

However, those who sought refuge there perished when the entrance was set ablaze.

“That is the kind of history we want to uncover, and it can become a tourism product,” Abdul Karim told a press conference after launching the Bau Sports Carnival 2025 at the Bau Mini Stadium on Saturday night.

“Many people will come to pay their respects to those who perished. So, it becomes a tourism product.”

‘Ghost Cave’ is among several caves in the district identified for potential development.

Abdul Karim added that other notable sites include the ‘Wind Cave’ and ‘Fairy Cave’, both of which remain largely unexplored and underdeveloped.

“Where there are large limestone formations, there are bound to be caves. In Bau, we have many caves,” he added.

He also mentioned that several other cave systems between Serian and Bau, including areas around Padawan and Sapit, have been identified based on a briefing from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).

“If that information comes from SFC, then it’s credible. These areas should be studied, and if they hold tourism value, they ought to be preserved,” he added.
