KUCHING: Pustaka Negeri Sarawak has announced the Sarawak Global Media and Information Literacy Dialogue 2025 (SGMILD 2025), which will be held on Oct 29 at the Gallery™, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak.

It will be streamed live via Pustaka’s Zoom, Facebook, and YouTube channels.

The dialogue is part of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak’s Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week 2025, celebrated annually from October 24 to 31.

With the theme ‘Minds Over AI: Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Digital Spaces’, SGMILD 2025 will highlight the crucial role of media and information literacy in an era where artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly influences everyday life.

Organised in collaboration with the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), the event is expected to gather 1,000 participants from across various backgrounds including librarians, academics, youth, community representatives, digital content creators, media practitioners, technology experts, and international delegates.

“The Sarawak Global Media and Information Literacy Dialogue 2025 is a platform for knowledge sharing, reflection, and empowerment, particularly as we navigate the challenges of the AI era,” said Pustaka Negeri Sarawak in a statement on Friday.

“By engaging youth, educators, and communities, we aim to strengthen digital awareness, promote ethical media use, and celebrate cultural diversity in the information landscape.”

SGMILD 2025 will be officiated by the Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

Among the key focus areas of the dialogue are critical thinking in the algorithmic age, addressing issues such as algorithmic bias, fake news, and deepfakes; empowering youth as ethical digital citizens; indigenous and multi-ethnic perspectives on AI and MIL; libraries and archives as guardians of truth; and AI ethics, governance, and digital rights.

The event will also explore implementing UNESCO’s guidelines for Media and Information Literacy Cities (MIL Cities).

The full-day programme will include keynote addresses and panel discussions featuring experts from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and India, along with local youth leaders and indigenous representatives.

Participants will also enjoy community networking sessions and cultural performances by the Dayak Cultural Foundation.

Other highlights during MIL Week 2025 include ‘Kawan atau lawan? AI dalam dunia misinformation’ (October 27), ‘Internet tak salah, yang salah kita, betul ke?’ (October 28), ‘Teaching smarter with AI: practical tools and ethical use’ (October 30), and Program Reading Seeds: “Kesihatan awal kanak-kanak: peranan awal dalam perkembangan otak” (October 31).

The programme is open to all and free of charge.
