KUCHING: Sarawak aspires not only to be a ‘green’ state of producing clean renewable energy but also to be a high-tech state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, however, said this can only be achievable if youths have good education and take up courses related to technology.

“I have just announced i-CATS University College here is offering a new programme on aerospace. It will be the Faculty of Aerospace Technology which has been approved by the Ministry of Higher Education.

“The programme is also related to chip-making, especially avionics as well as on aircraft component, and drone components.

“Hence, this is something new and we want all anak Sarawak to be able to study in this new field and develop Sarawak as a high-tech country (region),” he said during the Teochew Sim Clan Association 40th anniversary dinner at Pullman Hotel here last night (July 28).

Abang Johari said he hopes to see the state involved in satellite technology.

“As you know, Sarawak has been recognised as a high income state by the World Bank for two years. What we are going to do is to translate it to the median household income.

“And if you want to get our people out of poverty, the only answer is through education. Once our children are smart, they can contribute to society,” he said.

Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Malaysian Sim Clan Association president Sim Moh Khian and Sarawak Housing and Sarawak Teochew Sim Clan vice president Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok.
