KUCHING: Smuggling networks operating across Sarawak took a major financial hit after the General Operations Force (GOF) crippled multiple illegal supply chains, seizing contraband worth RM35.31 million in a series of coordinated operations.

The enforcement push, carried out from Jan 15 to Jan 31, saw the Sarawak GOF Brigade chalk up 23 operational successes under ‘Ops Taring Alpha’, ‘Bravo’, ‘Charlie’, ‘Chiller’, ‘Batas/Awas’ and ‘Libas’, targeting smuggling routes, illegal storage points and logistics networks statewide.

Sarawak GOF Brigade Commander SAC Lim Bak Phai said the operations disrupted a wide spectrum of illicit activities, from untaxed consumer goods to environmental crimes.

“During this period, the brigade seized frozen food products without permits worth RM25.01 million as well as untaxed cigarettes and alcoholic beverages valued at RM5.79 million.

“The operations also involved the seizure of controlled goods and essential items worth RM1.17 million, including garlic, sugar, LPG gas cylinders and rice.

“Apart from that, the brigade crippled illegal logging activities with the seizure of timber valued at RM425,000, and confiscated fireworks and firecrackers without valid permits worth RM2.21 million. Vehicles and equipment used in these activities were also seized for further investigation.”

All seizures have been handed over to the relevant enforcement agencies for further action under existing laws.

SAC Lim stated that the latest successes contributed to the overall ‘Ops Taring’ enforcement operation conducted throughout January, which recorded 55 cases and 57 arrests involving both locals and foreigners, with total seizures amounting to RM45.8 million.

In light of this, he advised the public to stay clear of smuggling activities and the handling of goods without valid permits, warning that enforcement agencies will continue to pursue offenders aggressively.

He pointed out that such operations will be intensified to dismantle smuggling networks, curb cross-border crime and safeguard public order.
