GOF seizes RM1.4 mln in beer, arrests five

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The General Operations Force (GOF) have arrested five men and seized over RM1 million worth of untaxed beers last week.

The operation, codenamed ‘Op Taring Alpha’, was carried out by the Sarawak GOF Brigade’s Intelligence Branch around 12.30pm on June 23.

Sarawak GOF Brigade commander SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang said the team raided a premises believed to be used as a storage for various brands of beers that had bypassed customs clearance.

“During the operation, the team arrested five local men, aged between 26 and 36, for further investigations.

“Thorough checks led to the discovery of 32,736 litres of beers in the premises and inside a lorry.

“The total seizure value is estimated at RM1,457,648, based on market value,” he said.

Both the suspects and the seized goods, including the lorry, have been handed over to Kota Samarahan district police headquarters (IPD) for further actions.

Che Ghazali added that the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, Section 15(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and Section 13(1) of the Local Authorities Ordinance 1996.
